Oats Khichdi

A full meal on its own so comforting and quick to make. Serve it with Yogurt and I bet you gonna adore it.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes including the time of soaking the Split Moong Dal.

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Serves: 2

Ingredients and Quantity:

Quick Cooking Oats- 1/3rd cup

Moong dal, split and skinned – 1/3rd cup

Cumin seeds- ½ tsp.

Turmeric powder- ¼ th tsp.

Red chilli powder-1/4 th tsp

Onion, finely chopped- 1 no. small

Tomato pureed – 1 no. large

Green peas- 45 gm.

Ginger, finely chopped- 3/4th tsp

Green chilles, chopped- ½ tsp

Salt- to taste

Extra Virgin Olive oil- ½ tbsp.

Water – 2.5 cups / as required

For the Tempering:

Extra Virgin Olive oil- 1/4th tbsp..

Mustard seeds- ½ tsp.

Whole Red chillies-02 nos.

Asafoetida- a pinch

Garlic, sliced- 1/4th tbsp.

Red chilli powder- 1/4th tsp (Optional)

For the garnish:

Coriander leaves, fresh, chopped- ½ tbsp.

 Method:

Pick, wash and soak Split Moong Dal for 15 minutes.

Heat oil in a deep non-stick pan add oil, heat the oil add cumin seeds, let them crackle.

Add chopped onion cook till translucent, add ginger and green chillies, cook for few more seconds.

Add turmeric powder and red chilli powder.

Add tomatoes let them cook till tender.

Add all the green peas. Add the rinsed moong dal and oats. Sauté for few seconds.

Add water. Adjust salt.

Cook for 15 minutes.

Once it is cooked give it a tempering by heating oil , then adding the mustard seeds, whole red chillies , asafetida, sliced garlic and red chilli powder.

Pour this tempering over the cooked Khichdi.

Serve it very hot garnished with chopped coriander leaves accompanied with Yogurt.

 Chef Tips:

  1. You may pressure cook the khichdi (Two whistles) to save time.
  2. You may sprinkle lemon juice if desired.
  3. You may add vegetables of your choice.
  4. You may add fresh curry leaves in the tempering of the Khichdi.
